Arizona Matsuri Festival

Astral figures from anime congregate
in counterpoint to kimonos, taiko
drumbeats directing my pulse;
origami stars constellate the booths
all around, and delicious scents beckon
from every side. I, seeking Haiku,
take shelter in bonsai displays,
then dive back into the crowd
like a cormorant, until,
caught in an eddy, characters
flowing around me, I stand,
heart pounding, wooden
as a kokeshi doll, head bobbing.

After 20 years in a rural area where the population of the largest town is about a thousand, I’m eager to take in all of the experiences available in a big city, but sometimes find them overwhelming.
