It shadows
me; it’s a cloak when
I choose it,
a mantle of protection
in a crowded room.

people swirl around,
i-phones flash—
my invisibility
broken by the light.

As an introvert in an extroverted family, I enjoy being an observer in the shadows, but then the flash goes off, I lose my invisibility, and I know I’ll be on Facebook tomorrow.

  1. I agree that it’s a gift to make yourself “invisible at high noon” (a poet once said that but I can’t recall whom/where) but the flashes and specks of the modern world can still be so intrusive, inadvertently breaking that gift. Thank you for this Shadorma, Denise.
