Nasturtiums

Fun feeding fairies
berries and blossoms away
from sun and sports.

***

Nasturtiums must have grown
somewhere nearby outside of books,
but I was unaware of their possibilities
for games of “fairy feast” in the shade
under the lilac bush. In my sparse landscape,
I relied on juniper berries and rose petals,
playing alone, keeping an eye out
for rabbits of velveteen or wearing gloves.
Now I plan to search for this illusive
South American “nose-twister”
for salad, still playing these days,
with my food if nothing else.

I wrote this “po-bun” in response to Ronovan’s haiku prompt and the NaPoWriMo challenge to write about “play”. Learn more about the Arizona Nasturtium here.
