Quick lunch

A childhood picnic meant two episodes
of carsickness sandwiched by white bread,
pimento loaf, and processed cheese.

In El Salvador, I discovered
the tempting allure of Pupusas!
fat, hand-patted tortillas stuffed
with cheese, ground pork, or beans,
cooked outdoors on a griddle,
served on brown paper, and eaten
standing up, leaning over
to avoid dripping on our clothes.

The cross-country trips of my youth
were a series of picnics punctuated by stops
to throw up or read historical markers.

In response to the NaPoWriMo challenge, I extracted some lines from my long essay on why I hate sandwiches. Enjoy this white bread and its savory filling.
