In third grade, I was as smart as I’ll ever be,
trying new foods, deciding to learn French.
“Off in her own little world,” they’d say,
as I gazed off into a land of dreams.
Once I thought I’d be a tour guide, leading
the crowd, brandishing a furled umbrella.
I saw myself in a glass booth, crowned
with headphones, facilitating world peace.
Today, I translate from my recliner,
looking over my laptop at the view,
happy in my own peaceful little world.
