Yo no soy yo

Yo no soy yo
Juan Ramón Jiménez

I am not I
Translated by Denise DeVries

I am that one
walking unseen beside me;
sometimes glimpsed
and sometimes forgotten.
The one who stays silent when I speak,
who forgives lovingly when I hate,
who strolls where I am absent
and who, when I die, will stay behind.

Soy este
que va a mi lado sin yo verlo;
que, a veces, voy a ver,
y que, a veces, olvido.
El que calla, sereno, cuando hablo,
el que perdona, dulce, cuando odio,
el que pasea por donde no estoy,
el que quedará en pié cuando yo muera.

Here is another poem in which a poet explores his identity. Juan Ramón Jiménez was a follower of Rubén Darío, founder of the modernismo literary movement in Spain.
