Alice Blue

With “sheer rapture,” Alice
left her looking glass and dove
into the rabbit hole
dressed in iceberg indigo
the color of smoke rings
over green baize tables,
danced in quicksilver gauze
or sagebrush silk, romanced
on cerulean seas, dined
on the Silk road with the dowager;
in azure she cut her wedding cake
with a rapier as sharp as her wit,
put a tack on a Capitol chair,
watching a stranger rise
in surprise, “like a bolt
from the blue,” and all this
before she was twenty-two.

When I read today’s Paint Chip prompt, I became curious about the color called “Alice blue” and learned about the scandalous First Daughter Alice Roosevelt for whom the color was named. She must have had thousands of gowns for all the parties she attended, but the owner of the “Alice Blue Gown” only had one.
