You straighten a toppling stack,
pace the sacred aisles shadowed
by ghosts of tales, spirits of stories,
whispers of characters rising
from every page and spine
like mist from the fields at dawn.
At your fingertips stand a wealth
of volumes, wholesome to grizzly,
uplifting to gripping, from dusty tomes
to new releases in bright-hued covers.
Guardians of the keys of knowledge,
what power you wield! What secrets
you hold, what magic you may reveal!
What self-control to walk on past,
leaving the pages unturned, plots
interred, protagonists unheard
until your work is done!

This is absolutely fantastic, Denise 😀 a befitting poem in praise of librarians who mean so much to all especially to the ones who know the value of and appreciate books. I love; “At your fingertips stand a wealth of volumes, wholesome to grizzly, uplifting to gripping, from dusty tomes to new releases in bright-hued covers.” Thank you so much for writing to the prompt 💝💝

This is so true and so well-deserved, Denise. May I ask how you thought to write about librarians? What was the inspiration?

I was scheduled to meet that afternoon with some librarians to talk about writing local writing events.

Denise, this is an absolutely wonderful poem. You do get into the heart of the matter with librarians, definitely a lot of self restraint to walk by the tantalizing shelves. Alice

In a poem of beautifully composed lines …. this stood out for me … ‘guardians of the keys of knowledge’ ~ I thoroughly enjoyed your Panegyric poem.

Denise,
My mother was a librarian for a while and this reminded me of how seriously she took her work. So beautifully conceived and written. Well done.
