The NaNoWriMo diet

My fourth year of National Novel Writing Month begins tomorrow. Since I’ll be working on some linked short stories, I’m a bit uncertain about the outcome, but I’ve done everything I can to prepare.

My diet for the month of November will not include Hemingway’s hamburgers, cigars and whiskey, and there will be very little of Kerouac’s apple pie with ice cream, but I thought it might be fun to see what else famous writers eat. If I could make an ideal menu from what I read, I think I’d have Steinbeck’s posole and Plath’s tomato soup cake. Since I couldn’t find a famous salad, I suppose I’d have Ginsberg’s borscht.

Many writers recommend planning NaNo meals ahead of time, but in cooking as in writing, I prefer a general outline. I found one set of recipes that seems ideal, since most of the items can be eaten with one hand while writing with the other. I’m not a big fan of sandwiches, but the snacks, iced coffee and macaroni looked good.

In addition to my usual frozen lasagna and homemade chili and spaghetti, this year I think I’ll try taco casserole with black beans cooked the day before.

How about you? Any good recipes you’d like to share?
