Artifact I: Grandma Helen’s knitting bag

I still use Grandma’s leather knitting bag
my father monogrammed with an “H,”
but not for knitting or crochet;
I never had the knack.
She was quite prolific for a woman
who never sat down; sweaters, mittens
and hat-shaped toilet paper covers
appeared like litters of kittens;
she made hats of beer cans sliced
and spliced with yarn stitches,
and once gave me a sweater
of irregular multicolored patches
like Jacob’s famous coat
or a knitted crazy quilt.
Her finest work — I wish I had it now.
