Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. – James 4:14 NIV
That sounds like a pessimist’s perspective, doesn’t it? When we can’t see what the future holds, we could look at things another way. Instead of being discouraged about our short lives and low personal impact, we could try optimism and faith.
As C.S. Lewis told an audience of scholars, “Plausible reasons have never been lacking for putting off all merely cultural activities until some imminent danger has been averted or some crying injustice put right. But humanity long ago chose to neglect those plausible reasons. They wanted knowledge and beauty now, and would not wait for the suitable moment that never comes.”
Under the light of the sun, we, like the mist, can bring beauty to the landscape.
