A pensive player

Dreaming Woman by Antonio Diego Voci

The Malacandra maiden plays a sad mandolin,
melancholy beneath the waning moons,
dreaming of a far-off world
of tulips and turtledoves
where a warm wind whispers
through solid, sturdy trees.

My friend Donna introduced me to her ancestor Antonio Voci’s art just after I read Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. One of the sentient species on the planet is called the Sorn. They appear like elongated humans, although they probably bear little similarity to the woman in the painting.
